"I have a lot of thoughts on this unit. It was very interesting because it had something to do with a real life subject evolving kids and how the amount of money spent on them affects their graduation rate... Since the story was interesting I guess it grasped my attention where I wanted to do the work and learn more." - 10th Grader

The story behind this Algebra / Linear Programming unit involves splitting up a large, overcrowded school into two smaller schools, a process that has been forced upon many big schools throughout New York City. Once your students determine how many imaginary students should be placed in each of their new schools, their goal is to minimize the overall cost to the schools, to maximize the Graduation Rates, and to take into consideration which of the possible answers would be the best and most fair to all students involved. |
